Annual Rye History Guided Walking Tour
Stretch Your Legs and Your Imagination
The Evolution of a Suburb: Rye from 1850 to 1950
This year’s tour begins with the arrival of the railroad in 1850 and ends with post-WWII Rye in 1950.
During that 100-year span, Rye evolved from a small, agricultural community into the vibrant suburb of today. Docents at various stops along the route will discuss the impact of the railroad on Rye’s commercial district and the development of her residential neighborhoods. You’ll also learn how these changes, and those wrought by two World Wars and the Depression, affected her religious, educational, and civic institutions- even including her current form of government.
