The Civil Rights Movement led by African Americans used nonviolent civil disobedience actions to transform the United States. This movement started in the courts, with the goals of achieving equal opportunities for African Americans in education, housing, employment and transportation. Many African American women made major contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and their stories are rarely told. Patricia A. Montgomery’s structured swing coats are story quilts, created with African American traditional quilting designs and construction techniques. She will share these women’s stories and her artwork, taking us on a journey through Civil Rights history.
