Rye Historical Society 60th Anniversary Shindig

On June 14, 2024, we celebrated our 60th Anniversary with an evening of dinner and dancing at Shenorock Shore Club and honored Susan “Susie” Morison, former Executive Director of the Rye Historical Society and long-time volunteer and member of the Board of Trustees.

The evening was themed circa 1964, featuring decorations and music that transported guests back to the early 60s. Guests dressed in outfits inspired by the 1960s, with women donning styles ranging from Audrey Hepburn’s elegant “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” look to Jackie Kennedy’s classic attire. Men embraced the theme with sharp suits reminiscent of “Mad Men,” James Bond’s suave tuxedos, and the iconic casual cool of Steve McQueen.

In keeping with the society’s mission to celebrate local history, each table was adorned with a number that corresponded to a historic landmark in Rye, NY, along with a description of its significance. This signature touch highlighted the community’s rich architectural heritage and added a meaningful context to the evening’s festivities.

The evening successfully raised over $126,000 to support key projects, including the preservation of artifacts, educational programming, and community engagement. The gala also reflected on the pivotal moment in 1964 when the relocation of Rye City Government from the Square House inspired a dedicated group of citizens to restore the Square House and establish the Historical Society.
